Sequential Relational Path

Endorsed by the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development

The Sequential Relational Path is designed from a neurosensory perspective. It is not a design of random movements. Each activity/element is intentional to move the child in sequential patterns based on Dr. Perry’s Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics. It begins in the brainstem and moves forward into the frontal cortex. This helps the child therapeutically build self-regulation skills in a sequential manner. It meets the child at up-regulation and moves fluidly to down-regulation through co-regulation, body movement, vestibular stimulation, proprioceptive exercises, mindfulness, and stretches. It is also designed to be completed in reverse order (i.e. begin at the Labyrinth) for children who need to move from down-regulation to up-regulation. Movement causes neuro chemistry changes in the alert status. Completing movement in a specific purposeful sequence will aid caregivers in facilitating desired regulatory level outcomes in children of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. Like any good story, the SRP is categorized by Beginning, Middle, and Ending. This model encourages mindfulness and invites the child to actively participate in creating their own story. It gives them a sense of control and stirs imagination. It is more than a simple “sensory path”. It was intentionally designed to maximize the regulating benefits or specific neurosensory movement sequences as well as foster connection between participants.
